The Vote
The fight for control of AWARE is over. With a no-confidence vote of 1414:761, the scary exco was removed from office last night.
The victory surprised me; I did not think the issues or the organisation were important enough to move enough people (women) to action.
On a personal level, I have read the entire episode wrongly.
This saga will go down as a historical event for many different reasons.

guess wat? i used to be part of AWARE but dropped out cos i found that my views differed on some issues. this is quite some saga, but not surprising judging from my past experience dealing with some passionate members.
I don't care for the organisation either. I tried to volunteer for it before but they didn't seem to be bothered in engaging volunteers despite that I went to the HQ as requested, only to be told to email, which I also did, to no response.
I just think the zealots ought to be put in their place.
it just shows that education itself does not much help in social civic mindedness sometimes.
the fight that is getting everybody in singapore sitting up straight on their chairs to catch the latest gossips are involving people who are highly educated and very informed. I am surprised to the number of hypocrites we have here....and to certain extent, never mess around with women.
wow! edpj, you were a member? and wg, you volunteered? i confess i never even knew it existed until now
edpj - interesting exposure working with volunteers right? i find it mostly frustrating but will still work with them if it is a cause i believe in.
wildgoose - i repeat myself - i never thought much of aware as a woman's advocacy organisation.
bunny - education got nothing to do with reasonableness or manners :)
suziewong - there are many like you who never heard of aware until the recent spat. that's why i am surprised at the huge response to take back control. i think it is that people feel revulsion at the religious zealots rather than that they think aware is important.
lets just say my experience were with members who were well, interesting characters. i joined when i was still with the government (cos then quite free mah), but then again they gave me the feeling that im like a 'spy'... now that im in the private sector, i have totally no time!!
yes wg, i wanted to volunteer too but they made it so difficult to volunteer! finally, i really got frustrated. i was out on biz trip so missed out paying the annual fee; only to come home to 2 strongly worded reminders, to the line of 'if u are not with us, u are on the evil side'. so got pissed and dropped out lor.
let's just say, i was unAWARE, now that I'm aware, i think now is BEWARE......HAHAHAHA...sick joke...i know i know
edpj - i am surprised to hear of your experience with them. then again, maybe they never had much to do so never needed volunteers. but you confirmed my suspicion they were never important in whatever women's courses they took up for.
